Cloud-powered data analytics platforms like Snowflake, Amazon Redshift and Google BigQuery are fomenting a quiet revolution by unlocking customer and market insight to drive better informed business decisions. However, the data used by such tools often contains personal and financial information that is highly regulated by laws such as GDPR and CCPA, as well as industry regulations. Some organizations mistakenly apply traditional controls to these cloud environments, and/or place too much trust in their providers’ built-in protections, which can create additional security and compliance risk. Others might mandate project owners anonymize or mask sensitive data, or not use it at all, meaning projects cannot deliver on their expected business value or are indefinitely delayed.
